Colombo. 3rd of October 1933."Dunbar-Nasmith commanded HMS E11 from 1914 to 1916, during which period he was decorated with the VC for attacking Turkish naval forces in the Sea of Marmara. He was promoted to rear-admiral in 1928 and vice-admiral in 1932, the same year that he became Commander-in-Chief, East Indies. After four years as Second Sea Lord (1935-8), he served as Commander-in-Chief Western Approaches and then as flag officer in charge, London.Hashagen's memoir describes wartime operations in the Atlantic, "where the trade-routes lay, the very arteries of the British Empire: there was the wide and storm-tossed battlefield of the U-Boats" (foreword). In peacetime, he became an advocate for international co-operation and was embroiled in 1932 in the so-called "Hashagen Affair" - a controversy surrounding his invitation from the BBC to appear on a domestic radio broadcast. The book was published in German in Berlin in 1931.
