Sparks, Nevada, was a railroad town founded in 1904 and incorporated in 1905, the eastern terminus of the Southern Pacific's Sierra Division. A photograph of No. 4002, a cab forward 2-8-8-2 Mallet-Consolidation compound expansion locomotive which entered service in March 1910 the month this card was written to move freight over the Sierra Nevada.
