A Critical Inquiry into Antient Armour, First edition of Meyrick's foundational work on arms and armour, richly illustrated, and here handsomely bound with the supralibros of John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow (1779 - 1853)."This, for the first time, provided a chronological survey of the development of European armour based on a study of early documents and illustrations and, to a more limited extent, of actual specimens of armour... Its influence on the study of arms and armour - reinforced by the publication of a revised edition in 1842 - has been enormous, and it is no exaggeration to say that all subsequent works on the subject stem ultimately from it" (Blair, p. iv). Meyrick (1783-1848) drew on his own celebrated collection of armour, parts of which are now in the Wallace Collection.A Tory peer with antiquarian interests, Brownlow was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Society, and served as president of the Royal Archaeological Society from 1841 to 1849.
