Scarce first edition of this celebration of influential female figures, collecting 11 biographies of radical thinkers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Harriet Martineau, and George Eliot. The initial blank is inscribed in a contemporary hand "Anna Thomas, Cincinnati" and a different, later hand has written "Presented to Annie" on the front free endpaper.Sara Underwood (1838-1911), a suffragist, humanist, and freethinker, deployed Darwinian evolutionary science to promote female suffrage and equality. Between 1880 and 1886, she was the co-editor of the Boston Index, a freethought newspaper owned by her husband, to which Darwin subscribed from 1871 until his death in 1882.
