First edition, presentation copy to the typist of the work, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "This copy of the Life of Grenfell George is presented to Miss Ada Goodman by its author, in faithful appreciation of the obliging & expert manner in which she accomplished the somewhat difficult task of type-writing the manuscript for the press. May 1909".George Grenfell (1849-1906) was a missionary and explorer who was awarded the Patron's Medal by the Royal Geographical Society for his detailed account of his travels through Congo and Cameroon. Following Grenfell's death in Basoko, a town on the Congo River, the Committee of the Baptist Missionary Society commissioned Grenfell's former classmate and friend, Rev. George Hawker (1857-1932), to write this biography. Hawker heavily relied on accounts from Grenfell's friends and family. This included Grenfell's sister, Mary Rowe, and his second wife, Rosana Edgerley, who accompanied him on his travels.Loosely inserted is an advertising slip for the Congo Reform Association.
