Questions on the Acts of the Apostles. First edition, one of 500 copies only, written by two of the small group of Western women resident in Burma in the first half of the 19th century. Untraced institutionally, this missionary imprint was printed for local use in missionary Sunday schools and Bible classes. A skilled linguist, Sarah Boardman Judson (née Hall, 1803-1845) is today principally remembered for her translation into Burmese of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. She reached Burma in 1827 with her first husband, George Boardman, and remarried in 1831 to Adoniram Judson (1788-1850), the first Westerner to translate the Bible into Burmese. Judson devoted her energies to translation, preparing religious texts, and keeping the fragile American missionary effort alive. Following Judson's death, Adoniram commissioned the American novelist Emily Chubbuck (1817-1854) to compile a memorial biography, and they eventually married. Chubbuck served the Baptist cause in Asia for several years, returning to the US in the early 1850s.
