The Travellers' Key to Kyoto. First edition of this guide to the Japanese imperial capital, "an essential part of the plans of all tourists" (p. 1). It introduces the palace, for which visitors needed a special permit from the embassy in Tokyo, various temples and museums, and cultural activities such as viewing the miyako odori dance.This booklet was produced by the Miyako Hotel, which branded itself as "the largest hotel in Japan". It was established in 1890 by the merchant Nishimura Nihee, who grew it into a 150-room establishment by 1906. Through its guidebooks and dedicated tourist information desk, it was one of the main forces in shaping the image of Kyoto among the developing tourist market.
