The Tale of Peter Rabbit. An unrecorded trial binding for a deluxe issue of one of the great classics in children's literature. Warne first published their edition of Peter Rabbit in 1902. Early deluxe bindings were issued in different coloured cloths, and Linder records a gilt decorated cloth binding with gold lettering from 1904. The publishers ceased deluxe issues of the series around 1911. This copy includes endpapers first seen in 1909 and 1910, together with an undated red ink property stamp ("Property Room, Not To Be Taken Away. Date..."), which has been seen in some volumes in the publisher's archive. We have handled one other unrecorded morocco binding for one of Potter's "Little Books", and conclude the present copy is a trial binding considered for production just before the deluxe issues were discontinued.
