Essays and Speeches. First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the initial binder's blank, "For W. McC Blair from his friend Charles G. Dawes. April 21st 1916", in the presentation binding by the publisher, retaining the card slipcase. The recipient William McCormick Blair (1884-1982) was a prominent banker in Chicago; he founded the William Blair & Company investment bank, still extent, in 1935.This collection of essays and speeches focus on questions of banking and trust reform, which at this stage of Dawes's career was his principal interest, and for which he had garnered a national reputation. It also includes extracts from the journal and speeches of his forebears.Dawes later held the roles of Vice President (1925-29) and Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1929-31). He is most famed for the Dawes Plan, which restructured German war debt, resulting in his award of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925.
