100 Jahre österreichische Glaskunst. First edition, inscribed by the head of the firm on the title page, "In aufrichtiger Verehrung Stefan Rath" ("in sincere esteem"), for the Viennese salonnière and writer Helene Bettelheim-Gabillon (1857-1946), with her delivery receipt loosely inserted.Rath (1876-1960) assumed control of the renowned Viennese glass firm J. & L. Lobmeyr in 1902 and headed it until 1938; this is the firm's centenary retrospective, extensively illustrated with examples of its work. The text was by Robert Schmidt, director of the Kunstgewerbe-Museum, Frankfurt am Main. "Schmidt's text consists of a history of the firm from its foundation by Josef Lobmeyr (an enlightened industrialist of the type of Josiah Wedgwood), and an account of the great craftsmen employed during its long history. A survey of the firm's productions gives us a very clear insight into the development of the art of glassmaking during the nineteenth century" (The Connoisseur, Vol. LXXVII, p. 180).
