Schnackenberg was a central figure in Munich's post-war theatrical culture, designing costumes, scenery, and posters distinguished by bold colour and stylized form."He was no copier; he had his own marvellous, distinctive style and he too could bring with few and sure strokes and intelligent use of luminous colours - always flat, shadowless colours - a great deal of power and vibrance... German art in the twenties has been forced into 'Bauhaus' or 'Art Deco' moulds, [and] there has usually been very little space, if any, for the work of this genius whose style doesn't fit either of these categories" (Terry & Rennert, p. 9).
