The Popper-Carnap Controversy. First edition, from the library of Popper's friend, the philosophical broadcaster Bryan Magee (1930-2019), with his initials and the date of the book's purchase from Blackwell's in Oxford (October 1981). By 1971, Popper and Magee were friends and intellectual allies. Popper appeared twice on Magee's 1970 radio series Conversations with Philosophers, and in 1973 Magee wrote a laudatory book-length study of Popper's thought: one of the earliest such studies of Popper. In his 1998 memoirs, Magee judged Popper "the foremost philosopher of the age" (p. 246).This work, by the Canadian political scientist (born 1935), explores Popper's debate with the German philosopher (1891-1970) over the latter's conflation of the qualitative degree of confirmation with the quantitative degree of probability.
