Tales of the Argonauts and Eastern Sketches by Bret Harte Riverside Edition, Houghton Mifflin & Co., Boston, 1882 Printed at The Riverside Press, Cambridge Hardcover, brown cloth with gilt spine lettering Unique Inscription: “To Herman Hauser, my friend, with the hope that he may never turn my picture to the wall. Kirke La Shelle, Chicago, Oct. 20, 1891.” Kirke La Shelle (1861–1905) was a noted Chicago dramatist, critic, and later New York producer whose credits include Arizona, The Great Ruby, and the stage adaptation of Ben Hur. This copy predates his Broadway career and reflects his Chicago theater period. Condition: Sound binding; mild shelf wear Moderate page toning and light foxing typical for the age Gilt lettering clear Personal inscription on front flyleaf; light pencil marks (“75/4035”) on inner page likely dealer inventory, appears to have remnants of additional gilt on bottom, not legible.
