Autograph letter signed, with news from the mission in Lebanon. The missionary physician - officially the first woman to practise medicine in the Ottoman Empire - writes from Beirut to Mrs Campbell with news and requests for medical and ecumenical materials. She reports on the mission's new district of Keserwan, the visit of Arthur Judson Brown, and the construction of a hospital on the Tripoli road.After spending most of 1901 in the United States, Eddy returned on Christmas Eve and in January was assigned the previously unallocated Keserwan district, comprising 235 towns and villages. Although her supplies were "wrecked in a severe gale" en route from Sidon to Jounieh - including her hospital tent and teaching lantern - the loss proved temporary: with local carpenters' help, both home and dispensary were soon operational, and a larger hospital was nearing completion.She asks to be sent Presbyterian reports and medical material for the Arabic journal El Jahib and the Syrian Protestant College, and notes the stimulating visit of Brown and his wife during their 1901-02 Asian tour.The Eddy family long shaped the region's educational and medical life: her father founded the Sidon Girls' School and produced an Arabic New Testament commentary; her brother founded the Gerard School for Boys and supported tenant farmers and medical work; and a later generation served in diplomacy and with Aramco.
