Address from the Tenants of the Ashfield Estate on the Occasion of His Son, Henry John Beresford, Attaining His Majority. A deluxe presentation album, a splendid gift from the tenants of the Ashfield Estate to their landlord Henry Theophilus Clements (1820-1904), of Ashfield Lodge, Cootehill, co. Cavan, on the occasion of the 21st birthday of his son, Henry John Beresford Clements (1869-1940). The tenants also register their gratitude for the charitable works of Mrs Clements, that is, Gertrude Caroline Lucy (1842-1931), daughter of the Reverend David Frederick Markham, Canon of Windsor.The album opens with a hand-painted coat-of-arms. The next leaf has the recipient's name in elaborate calligraphy, followed by two leaves containing the tenants' letter to Mr Clements, both equally elaborately illuminated. The last four leaves contain the names of the tenants, listed in two columns.The album is signed on the verso of the coat of arms as the work of Marcus Ward & Co. Ltd, of Belfast. Marcus Ward began manufacturing paper in Belfast at the turn of the 19th century, and had become a fine printer, bookbinder, and stationer by 1833. In the 1840s his business developed its colour lithography printing business and this contributed to the company's fame as a publisher. With his death in 1847, his company passed into the hands of his three sons, Francis, John, and William, who developed the business further.The young man whose majority is celebrated here, Henry J.
