Winston Churchill in Peace and War. First edition of one of the earliest biographies of Churchill, scarce in the dust jacket. Churchill aided Scott with the book, which vindicated him in the aftermath of Gallipoli.Scott, the Liberal MP for Glasgow Bridgeton, published the first book-length biography of Churchill in 1905. This 1916 biography is an entirely new work and covers the subsequent 11 years of Churchill's career. Scott was a great supporter of Churchill and even in 1905 tipped him as a future prime minister. Churchill read the proofs of both biographies and provided the author with material. Importantly, Scott was an outspoken defender of Churchill's Dardanelles Campaign - the author was convinced that Churchill had the correct strategic vision, and that the campaign failed through lack of political support at home and military swiftness in the field. Churchill saw the importance of the biography in setting the story straight: he told his wife that providing Scott notes made him "feel how important it is for me to put on record a full & complete account of this great series of war events" (cited in ODNB).
