Proust, Beckett's epistemological and aesthetic manifesto, was first published in 1931. Three Dialogues, a series of letters between Beckett and Duthuit concerning contemporary art, was first published in the literary journal Transition in 1949.Federman & Fletcher note that Beckett found writing Proust "a hard job"; he reread the sixteen volumes of Proust's novel twice in order to write it.
