On A Chinese Screen. First British edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to a fellow writer on the front free endpaper, "For Achmed Abdullah who brings romance, W. Somerset Maugham". In 1930, Maugham contributed a short story to Abdullah's anthology, Fifty Enthralling Stories of the Mysterious East.The front endpapers have the bookplates of Abdullah (1881-1945) and his wife Jean Wick. Each bookplate was designed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning illustrator Charles Raymond Macauley.On A Chinese Screen comprises a series of short sketches written by Maugham during a journey along the Yangtze River from 1919 to 1920. The American edition was published the month prior.
