The Lark. [Number VIII & Number IX]. First edition of two issues of the influential literary magazine, published by the Bayside Bohemians known as "Les Jeunes" in fin-de-siècle San Francisco. The two volumes, here, comprise: Number VIII (December 1895) and Number IX (January 1896)."Besides The Dial only four [magazines] deserve serious recognition as predecessors of modern little magazines: Henry Clapp's Saturday Press (1858-66), and the Chicago Chap Book, Lark, M'lle New York, all of the nineties" (Hoffman, Allen & Ulrich, p. 7)."The Lark's variegated elements of design suited Burgess's sense of the city as well as the text and paper on which it was printed, even though an occasional large piece of bamboo broke a bit of type. The general effect was of a kind of ordered disorder, an achievement new to California's printing history" (Hart, p. 10).
