A Treatise of Fluxions: Or, an Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy. First edition of the first work in English to provide a full explanation of Newtonian fluxions, appearing before any of Newton's own publications on the subject. Prior to the publication of the Opticks a few months later in 1704, knowledge of the Newtonian method of fluxions was restricted to his most trusted correspondents and the select few individuals given access to his manuscript papers. Little is known of the early life of Charles Hayes (1678-1760), but he was evidently a proficient and widely-read mathematician, citing such figures as Newton, Leibniz, Bernoulli, de Moivre, and Fatio, in his introductory preface. His sophisticated grasp of the intricacies of Newtonian fluxions suggests that he may have been part of the small group of mathematicians circulating copies of Newton's manuscripts.
