"Planet Earth" - AS11-36-5355. An evocative image from the greatest space mission of the 20th century, as the moon-bound astronauts of Apollo 11 looked back towards planet Earth. On 17 July 1969, Apollo 11 was speeding away from Earth on an intersect course with the Moon. At a distance of around 98 million miles, Michael Collins (1930-2021) took this image on a hand-held Hasselblad camera, loaded with 70mm Kodak film. The picture shows night falling across the Eastern Hemisphere on the second day of the mission.These 8 x 8 inch chromogenic prints were primarily produced for the press, although many found their way to NASA's employees and their contractors.
