First edition of this often overlooked record of youthful travel; we have traced no commercial appearance for over two decades. Having just graduated from Cambridge, Monk (1824-1900) arrived in Constantinople on a French steamer in June 1848. Travelling by camel, he passed through Cairo, Alexandria, Beersheba, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and Damascus, his account concluding in Beirut in April 1849.The Golden Horn was Monk's sole book, and no second edition was issued. Following his return to Britain, he pursued a political career and became a director of the Suez Canal Company in 1884.
