Report of a Committee set up to Consider Certain Correspondence Between Sir Henry McMahon (His Majesty's High Commissioner in Egypt) and the Sharif of Mecca in 1915 and 1916. First edition of the British Government's official report into the controversial McMahon-Hussein letters, which concluded that "His Majesty's Government were not free to dispose of Palestine without regard for the wishes and interests of the inhabitants of Palestine" (p. 11).Issued shortly after the full letters were made public for the first time, the report was adopted at a meeting of British and Arab delegations to the St James's Palace Conference on the future of Palestine. British representatives on the drafting committee maintained that Palestine was excluded from McMahon's commitments but agreed that "the language in which its exclusion was expressed was not so specific and unmistakable as it was thought to be at the time" (p. 10).
