Born in India, Colonel Wylly (1858-1932) had a distinguished career and became an established military historian. James George Scott Neill (1810-1857) took command of the 1st Madras Fusiliers in April 1857 and was immediately pitched into the Indian Rebellion - the regiment took its nickname from the striking light blue forage cap covers worn on campaign, an innovation of Neill, who was killed leading an assault at the Siege of Lucknow. Wylly's comprehensive account covers the history of the regiment from 1639 down to 1922.
