[bound with] Public Documents of the House of Delegates, Extra Session, 1861 [Documents A through M]. Frederick, [MD]: Elihu S. Riley, 1861. First Edition. 1 vol., 8vo, (9 1/4" x 5 3/4"), [Various paginations: Doc. A, 24pp; Doc. H, 16pp; Doc. M, 16pp, etc.]. Bound in contemporary orange law sheep with red and black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. Good condition. The leather is significantly rubbed and soiled, typical of 19th-century sheepskin. The binding is fragile, with the boards in the process of detaching, though currently held by the cords. The head and tail caps of the spine are entirely perished. Internally, the pages show inconsistent foxing and various states of browning (oxidation), ranging from minor to major. However, the text block remains clean, supple, and entirely free of chips, rips, or significant mechanical damage. This volume is a critical primary source for the study of Maryland's "Secession Crisis." In April 1861, following the Pratt Street Riot and the isolation of Washington D.C., Governor Thomas Hicks called for an "Extra Session" of the Maryland General Assembly. Because Annapolis was occupied by Federal troops, the session was moved to the more "neutral" ground of Frederick. This collection includes the seminal Document A, the Governor's Message detailing the state's chaotic condition, and the highly significant Document H, which contains
