One volume, 8vo (9" x 6 1/4"), pp. xiii, 950, [14 index]. Bound in original 19th-century orange leather with blind-stamped borders. The spine has been rebacked in brown cloth with a handwritten reference "1094" on the spine. Over thirty folding maps and diagrams. Good condition. The spine has been repaired and replaced with cloth. The original leather is rubbed with significant blemishes on the boards and edges. Internal pages are browned with age and exhibit occasional foxing. Many pages have small corner bends. The folding map at page 454 has a tear along the central seam but remains attached to the binding. Several maps show creasing from improper folding. This significant engineering report, issued during the second session of the 46th Congress, provides a meticulous record of the United States' infrastructure and hydrographic progress during the post-Reconstruction era. As Part 1 of the Chief of Engineers' three-part report for 1880, it includes the comprehensive summary by Brigadier General Horatio G. Wright and Appendices A through L.
