SMEAD, W. H. [William Henry]. Land of the Flatheads. A Sketch of the Flathead Reservation, Montana. St. Paul: Pioneer Press MFG. Depts., 1905. First Edition. 1 vol., 8vo, (9" x 6 1/4") pp. 142, [10, ads]. Original green cloth with gilt title and decorative imagery on the front board. Profusely illustrated with halftone photographs. Good condition. An ex-library copy with significant markings. The front cover bears a white library sticker; the spine is hand-titled in white paint and black marker with a library call number. Both the head and tail caps are missing, and the edges are rubbed with minor soiling to the cloth. Internally, the title page is marred by a large "Withdrawn" stamp, and the bookplate of the Lawrence Free Public Library is present on the front pastedown. A library stamp appears at the foot of page 47. The gutters are cracked in several places, and there is a large hole in the final flyleaf. Despite these flaws, the text and the photograph plates remain generally clean. Published five years before the Flathead Indian Reservation was officially opened to homesteading in 1910, this work is an essential primary document of Western expansion and Montana history. The author, W. H. Smead, served as the U.S. Indian Agent at the Flathead Agency, giving him a unique vantage point on the region's transition. Smead provides a detailed "sketch" of the Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai peoples, while simultaneously cataloging the reservation's agricultural and mineral
