Views in India, Chiefly among the Himalaya Mountains. A handsomely bound copy of this illustrated Himalayan travel work, notable for its series of plates after J. M. W. Turner, engraved from the author's sketches, including the frontispiece and a dramatic view of the waterfall at the source of the Jumna.White's narrative records journeys undertaken between 1829 and 1832 through the Himalayan regions between the Sutlej and Kalee rivers, with views extending along the Ganges and Jumna and at Simla, as well as further subjects in Rajputana, Bombay, the Deccan, and Kathiawar. The plates combine topographical detail with a heightened picturesque sensibility. Further plates derive from drawings by Robert Melville Grindlay, whose own influential Indian views were published in 1826.This is the second edition; the work was originally published in two volumes in 1836 and 1837.
