First Papers of Surrealism. First edition of the exhibition catalogue for the first major exhibition of surrealist art in the United States. Duchamp and Breton gathered the work of more than 30 artists, displaying paintings and sculptures at the Whitelaw Reid Mansion in New York.The title of the exhibition derived from the application for American citizenship where immigrants had to file a declaration of intention or 'first papers'; many of the featured artists had fled Europe during the Second World War. Duchamp threaded the entire gallery with twine for his "miles of string" installation, which remains one of his most audacious projects. It obstructed views of the other works on display and forced visitors to duck and weave when moving through the gallery space.Other artists involved in the exhibition included Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst, and Rene Magritte.
