Selection of political cartoons issued by student red guards. A series of vitriolic cartoons skewering Liu Shaoqi, the highest-profile political casualty of the Cultural Revolution, and his wife, the veteran politician Wang Guangmei. The focus is their 1963 state visit to Indonesia, which was seized upon by red guards after the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution as evidence of Liu's lack of loyalty to Mao and his softening stance towards the cause of global revolution.Having long been treated as Mao's successor, Liu experienced a spectacular fall from grace in 1966. He and Wang were subjected to relentless criticism and the target of hundreds of denunciation rallies. These cartoons, issued by one of Shanghai's many revolutionary organizations, shows them enjoying the trappings of a capitalist jet-set lifestyle, cosying up to Suharto, and ringing the bell of counter-revolution. Some of the images also target Deng Xiaoping, Deng Zihui, and other members of Liu's supposed subversive clique.
