Savonarola's influential Italian popularization of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola's attack on astrology is paired with his Compendio di revelatione, an account of the prophet's career and visions since his arrival in Florence in 1490.Opera singolare contra l'astrologia divinatrice is a rendering into vernacular Italian of Pico della Mirandola's Disputationes adversus astrologos (1497), synthesized and paraphrased by Savonarola. Pico's text was published in 1497, edited by his nephew Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola, an ardent follower of Savonarola. The work presents arguments against the practice of astrology, partly drawn from the works of Augustine of Hippo and the Arabic theologian Ibn Tufail. According to Cantamessa, Savonarola's version was first published in c.1497, although this edition is not recorded in ISTC; a 1513 edition followed in Venice. Explaining Pico's complex philosophical doctrines with simple expressions, the book was aimed at the less-educated reader, more sensitive to divinatory astrology and prone to the astrologers' deceptions.Trattato della revelatione was first published in August 1495 as Compendio di revelatione (the Latin translation appeared later in the same year).
