Of all the many sustained correspondences in which H. P. Lovecraft engaged, that with Clark Aston Smith was outstanding and in many ways unique, for Smith, more than any other was Lovecraft's peer in the field of supernatural literature. This correspondence was initiated by Lovecraft with a letter dated 12 August 1922, written at the suggestion of Samuel Loveman and because of Lovecraft's admiration for Smith's drawings and poems. It was terminated only by Lovecraft's fatal illness in 1937.
