The History of the 487th Bomb Group. De Jong, Ivo. Paducah, KY: Turner Publishing Company, 2004. Hardcover, 328 pages, color and b&w photos. Activated in the United States in September 1943, the group trained with B-24 Liberators before deploying to England in spring 1944. It was based at RAF Lavenham in Suffolk and entered combat with the Eighth Air Force in May 1944. Its squadrons were the 836th, 837th, 838th, and 839th Bomb Squadrons. The 487th first flew B-24 missions against targets in occupied Europe and Germany, including airfields, transportation centers, bridges, and industrial sites. It supported the Normandy invasion in June 1944 by attacking coastal defenses, road and rail networks, and other tactical targets. Later in 1944 the group converted to the B-17 Flying Fortress, which it flew for the remainder of the war. The group took part in the major strategic bombing campaign against Germany, striking targets such as oil facilities, marshalling yards, aircraft factories, airfields, and communications centers. It also supported Allied ground operations during the breakout from Normandy, the advance across France, the Battle of the Bulge, and the final push into Germany. One of the 487th’s most notable actions came on 24 December 1944, during a large Eighth Air Force mission against German airfields during the Battle of the Bulge.
