The Hobo. First edition of this study, accompanied by three typed letters signed by the author and a fourth sheet of his notes for a monograph on human ecology. Dated 12 May to 25 June 1967, the letters are addressed to Professor George A. Theodorsen, a fellow in the department of Sociology and Anthropology of Pennsylvania State University.They propose a series of monographs on human ecology, interspersed with descriptions of Anderson's own experiences as a travelling labourer. The Hobo was published as part of an acclaimed series of sociological monographs produced at the University of Chicago between 1915 and 1935. "Inherent in Anderson's hobo narrative is a certain masuclinity that had an affinity not only to the dime novels he read but also to the hard-boiled notion of the loner - the individualist who toiled on the margins of society" (Salerno, p. 89). The book established homelessness as a formal subject of sociological study. Theodorsen published the standard reference work on Human Ecology, Urban Patterns, in 1982.
