The Jews in China. First edition of this pamphlet by an early Zionist arguing that tolerance toward Jewish communities in China had led to their gradual assimilation. The work enjoyed an "extraordinary reception" (Wald, p. 111) and was quickly translated into Russian and Hebrew.Saveli Maximovich Perlmann spent time in China as a fur trader before relocating to London in the early 20th century. There, he wrote a number of books on China, including Hassinim, (The Chinese) (1911), likely the first history of China in Hebrew, and History of the Jews in China (1913), an expansion of the present work.Today, he is remembered as the grandfather of Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the art and architecture historian responsible for the Buildings of England series.
