Secretarial letter signed, on the publication of Lord Randolph Churchill. A letter signed by Churchill informing a publisher that he had chosen another firm: "I have arranged with Messrs. Macmillan to publish my Father's life". Early in his career, Churchill often dictated letters for his staff to handwrite for him to sign; this example is in the hand of Annette Anning.Churchill completed Lord Randolph Churchill in late September or early October 1905 and contracted Frank Harris as his agent. Harris approached Methuen, Heinemann, Cassell, John Murray, and Macmillan (Cohen, p. 129); it is unclear which firm the recipient, "Mr Meredith," represented. Macmillan won the rights and published the book in January 1906. Churchill explains: "the offer which they made to me was so good that I was scarcely justified in going any further. Let me thank you for your kindness in desiring to be of assistance to me in the matter".Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections.
