Deluxe edition of his selected works, issued in a red carry case. A high-end presentation of the Maoist canon, issued during the Cultural Revolution as a political status symbol. The volume reproduces an officially approved version of Mao's selected works that was compiled in 1951.The calligraphy on the rear face has been deliberately effaced, as it reproduces an inscription by Lin Biao. Lin emerged at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution as Mao's successor, but growing enmity between the two men climaxed in Lin's death in a plane crash in 1971 while trying to flee China. In subsequent years, he was denounced as a traitor to country and party, and traces of his support for Mao were removed by government decree. For many people, Lin's demise burst the bubble of Mao's aura.
