Portrait of the Dalai Lama. First edition, first printing. Bell (1870-1945) was a friend and advisor to the 13th Dalai Lama through his role as the British Political Officer for Tibet. He devoted his life to "making Tibet intelligible to the wider world" and was a prolific author of works on Tibetan history, religion, and language (ODNB).
