Shanghai of Today. A Souvenir Album of Thirty-Eight Vandyke Prints of "The Model Settlement". First edition, first printing, of this famous photobook, including views of the international settlement's imposing architecture, expansive boulevards, and bustling streets.In his introduction, Owen Mortimer Green (1876-1959) confronts the pressing question of extraterritoriality in post-imperial China. "The example of Hankow since the Concession was surrendered in March and the heartbreaking example of the British representatives endeavouring to work with a Chinese majority on the Council, whose sole conception of municipal government is, apparently, to secure money for projects in which they are personally interested, is warning enough of what must be the fate of Shanghai if its administration were, within any period at present measurable, to be recast on similar lines" (p. 14).Provenance: signed, below a message of "love and best wishes", by five women, at least four of whom lived in Shanghai in the first half of the 20th century. They include Bertha Janda Hudson (1886-1972), Katherine Spencer Stocker (1873-1951), Else Henrietta Frondorf (1893-1958), and May J. Harris (dates untraced). The other signatory is one Olivia P. Kimball, likely also a resident of the city.
