China in Kodachrome. First edition, first printing, of this photobook accompanying an exhibition held from October 2012 to February 2013. Barbey (1941-2020) first travelled to China in 1973 as an accredited photographer to the French presidential press corps and visited again in 1980.His photographs capture the many stories of the eventful late-Mao and early reform periods, including the complimentary and competing impacts of ideology, economic development, and proto-globalization. Pictures of political life mix with those of Mao-era tourists, the return of wedding displays to Beijing shop windows, and urban street scenes.
