Four manuscript pages from the original journals; From the collection of Rolling Stones drummer and jazz aficionado Charlie Watts: four trophy pages from Inman's original journals, carrying an account of attending a "super-colossal" broadcast by the Chick Webb band, with full set list, together with four original photographs of the session - three of them tiny Kodak snapshots - and the signatures of Webb and 18 members of his band.This group also includes a copy of the first edition of the published journals and 15 press photographs from Inman's collection, with his typed or inked annotations on the verso: Louis Armstrong (3), Count Basie (2), Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson (2), Jimmie Lunceford (2), Don Redman, Jimmy Rushing. Luis Russell, Mary Lou Williams, and Andy Kirk, this last one also signed.Inman spent his high-school years in 1930s New York chasing the Swing Age, hanging out at stage doors for autographs, in record shops, and at live broadcasts. From the time his parents gave him a radio for Christmas in 1935, Inman, at 15, began to write a meticulous daily account of his musical adventures. He made complete radio logs of all the music he listened to, collected photographs and kept a daily journal of his encounters with the various stars he importuned for their autographs after concerts or broadcasts. Heartbreakingly, the original journals were broken up when no buyer with sufficient vision and funds could be found.
