Photographic portrait inscribed to the Governor of Hawaii. A large and imposing portrait, inscribed by the 32nd President underneath the image, "For Joseph B. Poindexter with the regards of his friend Franklin D. Roosevelt 1934".The recipient (1869-1951) was the eighth Governor of Hawaii, appointed by Roosevelt in January 1934 and serving until August 1942. Poindexter welcomed Roosevelt to Hawaii in July 1934, when he was the first sitting president to visit the territory.Poindexter's administration saw the introduction of new welfare provision and labour laws in the mould of Roosevelt's New Deal. He was a firm advocate of Hawaiian statehood and held a plebiscite in 1940, in which the change was backed by two thirds of the electorate, an important step on the winding path to statehood in 1959. Poindexter led the response to the attack on Pearl Harbor and controversially placed Hawaii under martial law.
