Together with a typed letter signed from Bernhard to John C. Unkovic who worked for the Reed, Smith, Shaw & McClay law firm, dated 13.12.1979.Widely regarded as their magnum opus, the Bechers' first monograph followed the catalogue of the same title which accompanied the 1969 exhibition at the Städtische Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf.Bernhard Becher (1931-2007) and his wife Hilla (1934-2015) won the Erasmus Prize in 2002 and a Hasselblad Award in 2004. Together they "changed the course of late 20th-century photography. Working as a rare artist couple, they focused on a single subject: the disappearing industrial architecture of Western Europe and North America that fuelled the modern era" (The Met).
