Through this article Gray defends Darwin against religious objections and proposes a reconciliation between evolution and natural theory. It was through this journal that the American scientific communication first encountered Darwin, immediately following the initial British responses. The work also includes a bibliographical notice announcing "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection: or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life" by Charles Darwin (Murray)
