(1 p. only) signed at foot by Sarah Bernhardt (foldlines), paper label nailed to head of caddy box with contemporary manuscript inscription: "This antique box was used by Sarah Bernhardt in Adrienne Lecourvreur at Booth's Theatre New York, ?1880", slight abrasion affecting "Booth's" on label, box approx. 100 x 180 x 100mm, [1890]. *** The tea caddy is seemingly a prop in the drama written by Eug ne Scribe, inspired by the French actress, Adrienne Lecouvreur. Sarah Bernhardt performed on November 8th at Booth's Theatre in New York. Tickets for this performance cost $40, and although only few in the audience understood French, she captivated her audience through her gestures and voice. After her first performance in New York, she made 27 curtain calls. She later played the same role in a silent movie, titled the same, in 1913.
