*** Please note the description of this lot has changed *** Martin (Gabriel, compiler & auctioneer) Catalogus Librorum Bibliothecae Illustrissimi viri Caroli Henrici..., Hoym's woodcut arms to title, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, with estimates and prices realised throughout in a contemporary hand, light browning, scattered spotting, contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, preserving original gilt backstrip in compartments and with red morocco label, [Pollard & Ehrmann, p.276; Taylor, p.246], 8vo, Paris, Gabriel & Claude Martin, 1738. *** The Breslauer copy and the only one he had seen with both estimates and prices realised added by hand. Karl Heinrich von Hoym (1694-1736) was a diplomat at the court of the Electorate of Saxony, who was imprisoned on false charges of treason (providing the town of S vres with the secret of Saxon porcelain production), and who committed suicide in his cell in Königstein Fortress in 1736. His estates had been confiscated, and his library of 4785 lots was sold at auction in Paris in August 1738. His books had been bound by the foremost French binders of the day, including Boyet, Girou, and Padeloup le Jeune.
