Iberian Civil Wars.- Knight (Corporal) The British Battalion at Oporto, first edition, engraved map frontispiece, 2 lithographed plates, ink ownership inscription to title, cracking at gutter and contents p.-p. 8 working a little loose, light marginal water-staining to plates and offsetting, original green cloth by J. Smith, spine browned, spine ends fraying, rubbed and bumped with a few marks and stains, 1834 [Thompson (Major-General Charles William)] Twelve Months in the British Legion, ink ownership inscription to half-title, very occasional ink annotations, preface pp. upper corners with loss (not affecting text), toning, some staining, later half calf, spine with red morocco label, 1836, scattered spotting and surface soiling, 8vo (2) *** Thomas Knight was a veteran of the Rifle Brigade, having enlisted in 1812. At the time of his recruitment into the mercenary British Battalion serving Queen Maria II of Portugal during the Miguelite Civil War, he was employed as a labourer at Chatham. The second-mentioned book, the printing of which is somewhat rustic in appearance, appears to represent an unrecorded title-page variant, with the Roman numeral date printed as MCCCXXXVI, omitting the D after M. We have been unable to locate another recorded copy with this variant.
