Until his death in 1942, he dug almost continuously, having investigated more than fifty sites. The methods that he employed were to revolutionize Egyptian archaeology, laying down basic principles that were to influence the likes of Heinrich Schliemann and Arthur Evans. The letters and journals that make up this book have been selected by Margaret Drower for the picture they paint of living in Egypt and Palestine over a period of sixty years. They describe Petrie's austere approach to excavating and reveal what life was like on one of his digs where creature comforts were practically non-existent. Married in 1897, the accounts and letters of his wife Hilda provide another perspective to dig life. Her letters to family and friends, and especially those to her children, tell of their experiences, the people that worked alongside them, visitors to the digs, dealing with workmen, villagers and bureaucracy. Above all they reveal how she took to life alongside her husband like a duck to water.
