This was the first collection that allowed general readers "to see exactly how complex and varied a writer Orwell was compared to what we had concluded on the basis of the major novels alone" (Schlueter, p. 95).The text was edited by Orwell's widow, Sonia, and Ian Angus, who helped set up the Orwell Archive at University College, London.
