A Hell of a War: Verses. First and only edition, rare, inscribed by the poet on the front free endpaper "yrs ever Thomas Trewin", and with his portrait photograph mounted above. A Hell of a War focusses on the horrors Trewin experienced during his service in France. We have traced just one other copy of in institutional holdings, at the British Library, and no copies at auction. Trewin served in the Middlesex Regiment in the First World War. The poems follow his journey from boarding the HMS Grantully Castle in February 1915, to Gibraltar, and on to the front in France, where he was wounded at Arras. In his introduction, Trewin describes how he wrote "in barracks, barns, stables, trenches, dug-outs, bivouacs and rest camps, under all the inconvenience and weariness of Active Service conditions" [p. iv].
